Wow! I am just back from a beautiful holiday on Scotland’s north coast. There are few places in Scotland that feel as wild and unspoilt as the far north and I was delighted to be able to share this part of the world with Speyside Wildlife guests. Our holiday began with a stunning journey north through the Flow Country, making several birding stops along the way. The wildlife didn't disappoint, with sightings of Osprey at the nest, fishing and catching a fish!
One of the real joys of this holiday is the incredible variety of habitats we visit. From sweeping moorland and peaceful lochs to dramatic sea cliffs and colourful coastal grasslands, every day brought something different.
The soundscape alone was unforgettable, with Skylarks singing overhead, Curlews calling, drumming Snipe and the chatter of Kittiwakes echoing around the seacliffs. Hundreds of Puffins delighted everyone as they bustled back and forth to their burrows on the cliff tops. Out to sea were rafts of Guillemots and Razorbills and groups of feeding Kittiwakes joined by Black-backed Gulls, Gannets and Bonxies.
Away from the birds, we enjoyed encounters with Otter, Common Lizard and a stunning Golden-ringed Dragonfly. Botany took quite a leading role on this trip with over 100 species identified, a highlight being the stunning but tiny Scottish Primrose, one of Britain's rarest wildflowers, a real privilege to see find it and see it in bloom.
Our visits to RSPB Forsinard, the spectacular coastline around Cape Wrath and the beautiful Castle of Mey, added even more variety to the week. Combined with comfortable accommodation overlooking the sea and plenty of time to simply enjoy the magnificent scenery, it made for a wonderfully relaxed holiday.
We had such a wonderful time enjoying Sutherland and Caithness and discovering together the empty beaches, the hidden Reserves and all the wonderful flora and fauna they have to offer. I was lucky to share this holiday with six delightful ladies, it was a fantastic week full of memorable wildlife encounters, great company and plenty of laughter and I look forward to returning to the Northern Highlands again.
