Our Finland Birds & Mammals holiday is packed with target species and, as always, some proved more elusive than others. That is all part of the challenge, but the wildlife we did enjoy, certainly made the trip a memorable one.
The holiday got off to an incredible start, with what could only be described as an owl-fest. Over just two days we recorded six species of owl, beginning with the delightful sight of young Tengmalm's Owls peering from their nest. Eagle Owl and Great Grey Owl soon followed, with remarkably close views of the latter, making it one of the highlights of the entire trip. We later added Ural Owl, Pygmy Owl and Short-eared Owl to complete an exceptional run of sightings.
Some of our woodland specialities took a little more perseverance. Red-flanked Bluetail kept us waiting, but eventually we enjoyed good views of two different birds. Hazel Grouse proved much more difficult, offering only brief views, but there was plenty to compensate, including excellent encounters with Wryneck, Waxwing and the beautifully marked Rustic Bunting.
The wetlands were equally productive. Slavonian Grebes, Red-necked Grebes and breeding-plumaged Ruff all performed well, while male Smew added another memorable sighting. White-tailed Eagles gave what must have been the closest views I have ever experienced and Parrot Crossbills were another unexpected highlight during our time in the hides.
Finland in early summer is about much more than birds. We also enjoyed butterflies, including Northern Chequered Skipper and Northern Wall Brown, while a beautiful riverside walk rewarded us with the exquisite Calypso Orchid, one of Europe's most sought-after wildflowers.
The final part of the holiday is always eagerly anticipated as we spend three nights in specially designed mammal hides. It requires patience, with long hours quietly watching and waiting, but everyone knows that the reward can be something very special.
Our patience paid off handsomely. At the first hide an impressive Brown Bear emerged, giving prolonged and remarkably close views that made every minute of waiting worthwhile. Then came an unexpected bonus as a beautiful Wolf suddenly appeared, remaining just long enough for everyone to enjoy unforgettable views.
The second hide produced an equally thrilling finale. After another patient vigil, a Brown Bear appeared once again before two different Wolverines arrived. Seeing this elusive species so well is one of the great wildlife experiences of northern Europe and a fitting climax to another excellent Finland Birds & Mammals holiday.
