Our Local Badger Clan - There are at least nine Badgers in our group, one of which is a cub from this year which took almost a month to appear compared to last year. It is very small and has a frayed tail, but it is a privilege to be able to watch these animals at such close quarters from our hide in the Cairngorms.
Pine Marten Sightings this Month - It’s been mostly the male Pine Marten that has appeared this month, as the female is likely busy rearing this year’s young and we would hope to see her more as we head into the autumn and winter.
What else have we seen at the hide this month - The Wood Mice and the occasional Bank Vole have been obliging, there has also been a Red Squirrel in the treetops, something rarely seen during our evenings. Red and Roe Deer have also been in the field below.
But recently we had something very different - we had a Tawny Owl visit the hide, a female most likely, as we’d heard it hooting its high-pitched shrieking call. It was first seen perched on a branch on the left-hand side of the hide by guests, then it flew in and perched on one of the Cypress trees, posing very nicely, then it flew away down the hill. A very unusual sighting!
