We had the best time in Northern Greece in September 2025 exploring Lake Kerkini and the surrounding area, so much so that we all thought a return visit in spring would be just the ticket!

This holiday, like the autumn holiday, is a single-base relaxing exploration of a wildlife-rich part of Greece. We’ll enjoy the birds, the scenery, the plants, the insects and the food!

We are visiting before the crowds arrive to spend time quietly enjoying the fantastic birdlife around Lake Kerkini, which will include early spring migrants such as Semi-collared Flycatcher, Whinchats and Wheatears.  Resident birds will be getting into breeding mode and the White and Dalmation Pelicans will be looking especially spectacular in their smart breeding plumage. The lake is home to literally thousands of breeding birds, so the activity here will be frantic. With the arrival of migrants there will be plenty of birdsong to delight our ears and around us the lush grasslands and hillsides will be starting to burst into life with wildflowers.

The lush green meadows will be filling with jewel-like orchids and I’m sure we shall be finding all sorts of treasures as we enjoy relaxing in the spring sunshine.

We won’t just be around Lake Kerkini, some of our favourite locations in autumn were up in the mountain areas, where we spotted soaring Golden Eagles, Nutcracker and huge flocks of Alpine Chough. In spring, the mountains will glow in fresh greens, instead of the golden yellows we witnessed in autumn, and some of these areas will be superb for spring migrants and wildflowers.

Another highlight on this trip is the food! Bring loose clothing, there is loads of delicious food that is very hard to resist!
