Costa Rica 2019 with Roy Atkins

Day One’s Magic Moment!

“It was day one and we were rushing for a boat, with some way still to go, when Roger said, “that was a sloth!” The dilemma flashed across Paco’s face, but this was our first sloth! And we would see more for sure, so should we stop or not?!  After a moment’s hesitation we reversed back and to everyone’s delight and Roger’s huge relief, there it was! This was no ordinary sloth. It was a delightful little baby Two-toed Sloth that was incredibly active! Many sloths are likened to a furry football stuck up a tree. This one was trying to find its way up the branches, but kept coming to dead ends and coming back down to try another route. Oh my… it was so cute!! We watched as long as we dared, finally wishing it good luck with its quest for the tree tops.

What had started as a hesitant, “OK let’s go back”, became the ‘Magic Moment’ for most of the group, right through to the end of the holiday, although that does not mean it didn’t have any competition!

Amazing Views and Wildlife

The amazing views of Resplendent Quetzal this year were high on people’s list too and we did see more sloths, plus Spider Monkeys swinging through the trees, beautiful Swallow-tailed Kites, tiny hummingbirds, toucans, Scarlet Macaws, stunning Turquoise-browed Motmots, Spectacled Owl, an incredibly tame Sungrebe, Snowy Cotinga, Blue Morpho butterflies, numerous colourful frogs, a Ghost Bat and we even watched (and heard) Howler Monkeys howling.

As well as stunning wildlife, Costa Rica has amazing scenery, like the volcano at Arenal,

Certainly, for many, the sloth was the winner. You can probably see why – just look at the photo and try not to smile!”
